The cost of applying to register for a trade mark depends on how many classes are applied for. There are 45 classes of goods/services that trade marks can be registered in. The classes chosen reflect the goods and/or services that the trade mark will be used for. The IPONZ official fee is $100 per class and further fees are set out on the IPONZ website here.
Getting a lawyer or patent attorney to help you register your trade mark may seem financially daunting, and applying yourself may seem tempting. However, applications don’t always get accepted first time, and simple defects are avoidable. An IP professional has the experience and expertise to efficiently get your trade mark registered, saving you and your business time and headaches. An IP professional can also provide strategic guidance for obtaining the best scope of protection.
For comparison, not registering your trade mark and finding yourself in a dispute with another party later on can cost significantly more than the cost of registration.
