How do I figure out the classification and specification of my trade mark?

When you apply to register your trade mark with the Intellectual Property Office (IPONZ) you need to list the goods and/or services for which you wish to protect your trade mark - this is called the specification or description of goods/services. Your specification should be clear and reflect the goods and services you honestly intend to provide.
As well as the specification of goods/services you need to select the class for the goods and services. The classification system is based on the International Classification of Goods and Services, which has 45 different classes for goods and services.
It is important to get both of these right. You want to be able to strike a balance between covering the fundamental aspects of your business and being broad enough not to restrict any future business venture you may wish to pursue. You cannot add goods or services to the application after it is filed.
It may be helpful to start to ask yourself some question about your business. Is it a product or services based business? Start broad and then filter it down to the specifics.
IPONZ has a classification tool that will help you decide on the classes and wording for your specification. https://app.iponz.govt.nz/ipol/app/ui/services/preApprovedGS
